The first piece I ever made multiples of. I designed ‘Spoon Me’ at university for my boyfriend at the time - he was a foot shorter than me, so naturally, I was the big spoon. He was the little spoon. End of discussion. Our friends became obsessed. Suddenly everyone needed their own set of spoons. So I made more. And more. I put them on Etsy in the early 2010s and, at one point, I was selling enough spoon sets every month to pay my rent. Not bad for two tiny pieces of cutlery.
They’ve since been gifted to lovers, long-distance partners, new mums, party girls, best friends and the occasional chaotic duo who simply understand the assignment. People project their own meaning onto them — nurturing, intimacy, comfort, mischief, morning-after tea, or just a quiet reminder that someone’s always got your back.
I make them in small batches every now and again, and they still feel just as special as they did the first time. If you’re going to buy one piece of SAM HAM as a gift, this is the safest (and cutest) bet.
